Some wildlife photography moments require a lot of patience, preparation and a little bit of luck. This photograph of a swan stretching its wings on a beautiful autumn morning is a perfect example.

I arrived at this location well before sunrise, hoping to capture some peaceful moments with the swans. Wearing my chest waders, I slowly made my way into the water and settled into a carefully chosen spot. Fully camouflaged, I waited quietly, allowing the swans to go about their morning routine without disturbing them.

After observing them for quite some time, I noticed that they started preening their feathers. From previous experiences photographing birds, I knew that they often stretch their wings after preening. I decided to stay still and keep watching, hoping one of the swans would give me that beautiful moment.

I had chosen this particular spot for a reason. I knew I would be photographing directly into the rising autumn sun, creating beautiful backlighting. The low sunlight passing through the trees added a warm golden glow to the water, while the dark background helped separate the white swan from its surroundings. I especially wanted to capture the light shining through its feathers, revealing all the delicate details of its outstretched wings.

And then, just as I had hoped, it happened. The swan stretched its wings, creating a beautiful moment of movement and elegance. The warm backlight illuminated its feathers, while the calm water reflected the golden colours of the autumn morning.

This is what I love most about wildlife photography. It is not always about taking as many photographs as possible. Sometimes it is about slowing down, observing animal behaviour, understanding the light and patiently waiting for the right moment.

For me, this photograph represents everything I enjoy about nature photography: being outdoors, connecting with wildlife and capturing those small, beautiful moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

A quiet autumn morning, a beautiful swan and a moment worth waiting for.
